Safe Streets Action Plan

In 2023, Mayor Mendenhall set a goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our roadways by 2035. The Safe Streets Action Plan will be a roadmap to reach that goal. The plan will list clear, data-driven steps that Salt Lake City and its partner agencies can take to make our streets safer.

Where did this idea come from?

The community told us safety is a top priority. That’s why this plan builds on the recommendations from the Citywide Transportation Plan and programs like the Livable Streets Program and the Capital Improvement Program.

Why create a Safe Streets Action Plan?

To eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2035, the plan will:

  • Create a clear roadmap with measurable actions.
  • Add layers of protection to make crashes less severe.
  • Bring together City departments and its partners.
  • Use data to focus on the most dangerous streets.
  • Center community input and transparency.

What is the Safe System Approach?

The national Safe System Approach adds layers of protection to reduce harm by focusing on five key areas:

  • Safe roads
  • Safe speeds
  • Safe users
  • Safe vehicles
  • Post-crash care

What is the High Injury Network (HIN)?

Streets with the most severe and deadly crashes make up the HIN. By focusing on safety improvements for these streets, we can prevent future tragedies.

Zero is bold — but it’s the only acceptable goal!
