Reimagine Jefferson Park
Jefferson Park was one of Salt Lake City’s neighborhood parks selected for funding from the Parks, Trails, & Open Space General Obligation Bond (GO Bond). In addition to the Bond’s $750,000 for general park improvements, the park was awarded $530,000 from the constituent Capitol Improvement Program (CIP) for a lighted perimeter path and amenities. Since the park serves the community as a vital stormwater protection site, any site updates must prioritize the site’s primary function as a detention basin. Public Lands is seeking input on two concepts and suggested amenities inspired by an initial round of public engagement in 2025. Both concepts seek to make the park a safer, more welcoming park, with a strong sense of place.

Review & Report
Overview
Based on feedback from the initial round of public input (a survey, attendance at several community meetings, conversations with stakeholders, and park intercept surveys) the design team developed two alternatives for the park.
During the second round of public input, over 150 participants provided feedback on the concepts via an online survey and a public open house. In addition to the perimeter loop path and lighting, preference was shown for a park with open lawn space for dogs and recreation, updates to the West Temple and Fremont Ave plaza, plenty of waterwise plantings and trees, and multiple places to gather. The "Heart of the Park" was the preferred concept. Available budget, public comments, and site constraints will inform the final design. Public Lands will continue working with key neighborhood stakeholders throughout the design process.
Next Steps
Now, the design team will begin detailed design work to make the concept design a reality. Professionals will analyze site details materials, topography, basin capacity, plantings, irrigation and more. Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2026 or early 2027.
