Reimagine Jefferson Park

Jefferson Park was one of Salt Lake City’s neighborhood parks selected for funding from the Parks, Trails, & Open Space General Obligation Bond (GO Bond). In addition to the Bond’s $750,000 for general park improvements, the park was awarded $530,000 from the constituent Capitol Improvement Program (CIP) for a lighted perimeter path and amenities. Since the park serves the community as a vital stormwater protection site, any site updates must prioritize the site’s primary function as a detention basin. Public Lands is seeking input on two concepts and suggested amenities inspired by an initial round of public engagement in 2025. Both concepts seek to make the park a safer, more welcoming park, with a strong sense of place.

Phase 1 Engagement

The first phase of engagement to identify the public’s values and vision for the project included a survey, attendance at multiple community events during summer and fall of 2024 and 2025, intercept interviews at the park, and outreach to park stakeholders.

WHAT WE HEARD

Overwhelmingly, we heard community members tell us they don't feel safe at Jefferson Park. This guided overall design decisions by employing Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles.

We also heard there are not enough places to sit or gather at Jefferson Park, the community is excited about the perimeter walking path, would like more shade, lighting, and would like to see some native / waterwise vegetation while keeping the central lawn for recreation.

Both concepts incorporate these key community desires to make Jefferson Park safer and more welcoming.
