Green Loop | Full Project Timeline
The Green Loop is advancing in phases, with each corridor moving at its own pace through engagement, design, and construction. While initial segments like 900 South and the flagship block connecting Library Square and Washington Square are already in motion, completing more than five miles of greenway will take time—potentially a decade or more.
Explore the timeline below to see how the project came about, what’s already been accomplished, and what’s coming next.
Phases
Community Engagement & Pop Ups (2023)
Spring 2023: Pop Up & Survey #1
What happened:
- A temporary Green Loop Pop-Up was installed on 200 East (between 300 S and 400 S) to show how downtown streets could be reimagined as people-focused spaces.
- Free lunch, music, and family-friendly games invited people to “come try it out.”
- An online survey ran alongside the pop-up to gather public feedback.
What we heard:
- 1,204 people responded — 63% said they’d use the Green Loop daily or weekly, and 90% live or work downtown.
- Strong support for more trees, green space, pedestrian-only paths, and features to reduce noise and air pollution.
- Some concern about vehicle access and traffic impacts.

Fall 2024: Open House, Tours, and Survey #2
What happened:
- In November 2023, over 150 people attended walking and biking tours and a public open house featuring large concept boards and a 16-foot corridor map for interactive feedback.
- A second survey focused on the 200 East corridor ran from Nov 2023 to Jan 2024.
What we heard:
- 1,000 responses — 76% supported more green space and preferred keeping it on the west side of the street.
- Continued calls for shade, safe pedestrian and bike areas, and social spaces like patios and gathering areas.
- Additional concerns raised around security, congestion, and maintenance.
