Currently there is shade and benches in the park around the city and county building that could be used for this purpose. And, there is always space on the benches or on the grass. Weren't there benches as one time around the library that were removed because the homeless were sleeping on them? Hmm. Is this another solution looking for a problem?

If there were more trees and some seating is hang out there more but all of the pavement makes it a bit hot. I’d also love to see this be water conscious.

Would love a more enjoyable landscaping- agreed with walking paths and pollinator gardens listed below. Berries and other edibles incorporated would make it overall nicer. Benches in a borderline bare, loud space is not so comfortable. Let's reduce traffic and increase shade.
I love the maze concept detailed below!

I'd sit on the lawn if there was one left. SLC needs to move it's festivals around a bit. Washington Square can only endure so much abuse.

I'm an inside person. Being fair skinned I can't sit outside in the sunlight or event he reflection of sunlight without getting sunburnt.

A couple shaded pavilion would be nice. Picnic tables, benches.
There's so many big events that take place on those two blocks. Embrace that somewhat and build infrastructure that would support that. That same infrastructure could be used for farmers markets other times.

I do not feel unsafe in the area but the scruffy grass is silly. Get rid of the grass and have paths and sitting areas and a pollinator garden maybe a playground.

Yes, we would all love to sit on the grass with all of the drug needles. Sadly, this is one of the prettiest areas in the city and the cities refusal to deal with the homeless that have completely ruined it…it would be better to just demolish it and put up a couple of ports potties.

Library Square has an incredible amount of open space that feels underutilized. Imagine transforming a portion of that space into a large, whimsical European-style hedge maze, filled with discovery and delight. Scattered throughout the maze would be themed reading nooks inspired by beloved literary characters and stories—cozy hideaways where people can sit, read, and immerse themselves in the magic of books.
This maze could become an iconic destination for Salt Lake City—something families from around the world would come to experience. Beyond being a playful attraction, it would also provide a functional benefit: shady, cool spaces for visitors during the summer, enhanced with built-in misters, and warm, inviting corners in the winter with discreet heaters.
By blending literature, play, and design, Library Square could evolve into a landmark that celebrates both imagination and community while drawing people into the joy of reading.

The benches are often slept on day and night at the City-County and Library building. Not at all condusive to feeling safe sitting on a public bence and getting lost in a book
